I was so honored and excited when Dr. Andrea Kantor wrote to tell me that her school, Dowes Lane Elementary in Irvington NY, chose Parrot & Firefly for World Read Aloud Day 2021. I had just one question--what is World Read Aloud Day?

Thankfully, I know how to Google, so my question was quickly answered.

Created by the nonprofit organization LitWorld, World Read Aloud Day inspires participants to grab a book, find an audience, and read-aloud! This global effort has called attention to the importance of sharing stories for over 12 years and is now celebrated in over 173 countries and counting. Held annually on the first Wednesday of every February, the event celebrates the shared experience and connection of reading aloud.

I asked Dr. Kantor how she discovered Parrot & Firefly and she replied--

"I found your book by searching and reading all of the new picture books that were printed in 2020. Our Assistant Principal agreed that the text and the message was just what we were looking for to share with all of our students and staff this year. We prioritize relationships, friendship and grit for our students and Parrot & Firefly has it all!"

Two days after the event (which was February 3 this year) I had the opportunity to do a virtual visit with the whole school. I spoke to them about my journey as writer and the process of writing and illustrating children's books. They asked questions about where I got my ideas and how long it takes to write a book.

It was so much fun! You can read more about it on the Irvington Schools Website
